Content, reporting and safety

Last updated: 2 November 2026

What you can post

If you add content to The Index Registry, for example photos or documents in your collection record, or anything you choose to share, it must:

  • belong to you, or be yours to share;
  • be accurate and honest;
  • be lawful.

What is never allowed

  • anything illegal, including content linked to fraud, terrorism, child sexual abuse or exploitation, threats, harassment, hate offences, the sale of illegal items, or encouraging self-harm;
  • scams, fake listings, or attempts to sell items you don't own;
  • other people's personal information without their permission;
  • content that infringes someone's copyright, trade marks or other rights;
  • spam, malware, or links designed to deceive.

Age

The Index Registry is for adults. You must be 18 or over to create an account. Alcohol listings need a separate age confirmation. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 18, we will close it.

How to report something

  • Use: the "Report" link next to any shared content, or email toby@theindexregistry.com with "Report" in the subject.
  • Tell us: where the content is, and why you're reporting it.
  • What happens:
    • we acknowledge reports within 2 working days;
    • we review suspected illegal content as a priority, usually within 24 hours;
    • we remove content that breaks this policy, and may suspend or close accounts;
    • where the law requires it, or someone is at risk, we report to the police or the relevant authority.

If we act on your content

We'll tell you what we removed and why, unless the law or someone's safety prevents it. If you think we got it wrong, reply to that email or contact us within 30 days, and someone not involved in the original decision will look again.

Complaints about how we handle safety

You can complain about our reporting process, a decision we made, or our compliance with the Online Safety Act, using the same email. Our complaints page explains timescales.
