How listings work

This page explains what you see on The Index Registry, how we decide the order of listings, and how we make money.

Who sells what

Every product listed on The Index Registry is sold by an independent professional retailer, not by us. When you choose "Buy at [retailer]", you buy from the retailer on its own terms.

What "Verified retailer" means

We show "Verified retailer" next to a retailer that meets all of these:

  • it's an established business that sells to the public;
  • we receive its products through its own product feed, directly or through an affiliate network such as Awin, after the retailer or network has approved us;
  • its product feed has updated in the last 7 days; if it stops, we hide its listings.

What it does not mean: that we have inspected the item, checked its authenticity, or that we guarantee the retailer's service. Each listing's record shows what we've checked and what we haven't.

Prices and availability

  • Where they come from: the retailer's own feed. We show when we last checked each one ("Checked 2h ago").
  • Accuracy: prices and stock can change between checks. The price on the retailer's site, when you buy, is the one that applies.
  • Currency: on the UK site we show only listings priced in pounds.

How listings are ordered

  • Search, "Best match": we order results by how closely the product's name, brand, reference and description match what you typed. Products with an image, a recent price check and complete details may rank higher.
  • Category pages, "Recently added": newest listings first.
  • Price sorts: strictly by price.

The commission a retailer pays us does not affect "Best match" or any sort order. We don't sell paid placements.

What we earn

When you buy through a link on our site, the retailer may pay us a commission. It never changes the price you pay. Some retailers and brands pay us nothing, and we list their products too.

Reviews

We don't publish customer reviews. If we ever show a rating, it will come from a named, independent source and be shown as such.

Earn

Earn is our ambassador programme. Whisky casks from The Whisky Index, and products from retailers with a direct agreement with us, show what an approved ambassador could receive for referring a buyer who completes a purchase. The amount comes from our published cask rates or the fee the retailer pays us, never from the product's future value. Products we list through affiliate networks aren't part of Earn.
